 Time consumpting hand embroidery looks great in the end. It gives exclusivity to this woolen jacket and is worth the time invested in it. Except my middle finger hurts for a while. It will pass, everything passes.

Inspiration: Pierre Cardin

Today’s Inspiration:   Pierre Cardin 

Pierre Cardin is a French Haute Couture designer who was born in 1922. He was born to a wealthy family of Italian merchants who fled fascism in Italy and immigrated to France around 1924. 

Cardin’s father wanted him to study architecture, but apparently he only ever wanted to be a dressmaker. Around age 14 he began an apprenticeship to a clothier, by 1940 he was working as a tailor, and making women’s suits. Around 1945 he moved to Paris. He worked for Elsa Schiaparelli (see past post) until he became the tailleure atelier for Christian Dior (see past post) around 1945. 

The House of Cardin opened in 1950. He gained notoriety by designing elaborate costumes for a famous party, and then began producing haute couture. Cardin was known for his space-age designs, for geometric textile prints and for his inventions- the bubble dress and the car-wash dress.

In 1959 he was expelled from the Chambre Syndicale for producing a pret-a-porter (ready to wear) collection. He was quickly reinstated. Cardin was a bit of a revolutionary- he was one of the first designers to play with licensing and was one of the to recognize Japan as a high fashion market.
